SCHOOL HISTORY

The school was founded in 1857, having started classes on August 2, 1858, and it was named Liceu Municipal (Municipal High School). It went through several designations, until it was given its present one, Escola Secundária de Bocage.

It was a Portuguese State mandatory that all Secondary Schools should adopt a patron’s name. The decision to name our school after the poet Bocage had to do with the fact that he had been born in Setúbal, as well as with the fact that the school had been named after him long before.

All along its lifetime, the school went through all sorts of reforms, having also been set in quite a number of different locations.

The present building was officially inaugurated on February 6, 1949, but didn’t start functioning until April 30, and it is bordered by streets named after former teachers and principals of this institution

This half-century old building has undergone two enlargement and repair works, and is home to about 2000 people, including teachers, students and staff.
